The fifth and last part describes the transformation of the TIRPITZ from a powerful offensive weapon to a steel colossus that is increasingly difficult to protect. A great quality and quantity of previously unpublished material illustrates the history up to its capsizing off Tromsø.
After years of research and evaluation of historical documents, such as the war diaries, as well as finding the corresponding photo motifs on site, almost all images could be precisely assigned with regard to location and time of recording. So the story can be observed again in chronological order, with the permanent relocation to Northern Norway, to the berth in the Kaafjord. Furthermore, the last major operation against an Allied weather station on Spitzbergen in September 1943 is documented, as is the almost destruction by British small submarines. The subsequent, ever increasing air raids made the end inevitable and so the RAF managed to bring down the largest German battleship.
In terms of content, the book has been supplemented with important detailed information, perspective drawings that contain the respective equipment status and camouflage of the ship, as well as route sketches. Furthermore, the recordings of the present and the past are juxtaposed with regard to the theaters of war, which have hardly changed until today.
Although it is a German ship, the TIRPITZ and also the famous sister ship BISMARCK enjoy great worldwide attention to this day. That is why texts and captions are accompanied by their respective English translations in order to make this historical period of the Navy accessible to interested parties all over the world.
