ATLAS ALSACE - military airfields, WW1

The belligerent device, French and German, in Alsace during the First World War, is evaluated in this atlas, at 63 airfields. Uncertainties about the location and dimensions of the aerodromes, the location of the infrastructure as well as the units that have stayed there remain. Due to the absence of many documents in the archives and the gradual disappearance of these events from collective memory. The Alsace region had before the war, only three German airfields, Mulhouse-Habsheim, the polygon of Strasbourg as well as Saverne-Steinbourg, whose use was until then reserved for the maneuver of the infantry and the cavalry. . This research work, carried out by Lionel Luttenbacher, in the French, German and American archives, made it possible to highlight the knowledge of the German military aeronautical system in Alsace, fruit in particular of the work of French observers and the interpretation of aerial photographs. .
