Goodbye Lionel! Our summer holidays ended peacefully and we were preparing to "take back the necklace" for a new "year". We did not know it would be without you Lionel! We will long curse this phone call of Saturday, August 24, when Annie, his wife, we learned the death of Lionel Labeyrie, occurred the night before. We had met at the end of the eighties, in Paris, thanks to a common friend, model maker, like us. We immediately sympathized but I did not suspect then that our meeting marked the beginning of a future and long collaboration coupled with a friendship and fidelity flawless. A few years later, at a turning point in my professional life, I asked him to draw the first cover of the magazine Avions, then being created: "Yes, it touches me a lot that you ask me that ...". It was the first of the 231 covers that Lionel was going to draw for this magazine. His collaboration did not stop there: blankets for hors-series or books, characters for Air Battles and Ships & History, casual portraits in Airplanes. A "mass" of drawings that undoubtedly constitute a remarkable work, just as unique in its kind; few magazines or magazines have probably worked so long with the same artist. And all this in all humility, with a lot of sensitivity because Lionel was a true artist. The elaboration of the drawings always led to discussions, remarks, a request for precise documentation. It can be said that his drawings reflected his character, his mood at the precise moment when he executed them. I always waited impatiently, despite the regularity almost routine (I do not like this word). The life of a society, which is smaller, is not easy but its friendship and support have always been in the worst of our difficulties. I thought we would finish together what we started and I did not even think I would have to write these lines. But terrible things happen in a life and Lionel has not been spared, far from it. The departure of his son has marked him terribly and his life was irremediably upset. Professor at the Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, no doubt he still found much pleasure in drawing and the idea of ??giving up the covers of planes, a time evoked, quickly left him: he wanted to stay on the way with we. However, the health problems accumulated lately have exhausted him and have mostly annihilated his great sense of humor and his willingness to fight. That's how he went, this Friday, August 23. We will now have to do without you Lionel and Aircraft as Ships and History will never be the same magazines again. This cover design that characterized him so much disappears with you, as well as these boards of uniforms so neat and detailed and we publish the ultimate opus in this issue. Thank you for everything, good flight, and sweet cruise, we will never forget you. The entire Lela Presse team joins me in presenting our sincere condolences to Annie. Michel Ledet
