Thanks to the albums of one of the sailors of the U-30, then of the U-110, the author was able to reconstitute by the text, but also by the image, the course and the fate of these sub- Kapitänleutnant Fritz Lemp and his crew, including sailor Willi Brohm.
We begin this discovery with the enlistment of this sailor, in 1936, in Cuxhaven then aboard the U-30, thanks to photos of high quality. We then go on to a very unknown history page: U-Boote's commitment to the Spanish war from 1937, with pictures in Cadiz, Seville, Ceuta, Tetuan, in the Canary Islands.
Then the beginning of the war, with a report on the U-30 of Captain Lemp. With this submersible, he will win many successes (17 victories) that will earn him the Ritterkreuz, received August 14, 1940, one of the first U-Boot-Waffe. However, his first commitment and success is marked by a tragic mistake, sinking the liner Athenia, resulting in passengers in death, including 22 Americans.
Comes the commitment with the U-110 whose second patrol ends in tragedy. The submarine is attacked on May 9, 1941 in the North Atlantic. Damaged, it rises to the surface, evacuated by a large part of the crew, including sailor Willi Brohm. Captain Lemp stayed on board, probably to sabotage the U-110, but British HMS Bulldog sailors had time to take over the submarine's Enigma machine, which will have important consequences for the continuation of the war. Fritz Lemp then disappears with his submarine, in the waters of the Atlantic.
As for Willi Brohm, we are following him in captivity in Canada with very rare and exceptional photos.
