After participating in operations in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, the 9th US Air Force was sent to Britain in late 1943 to become the main tactical air force of the United States, in preparation for the landings on the continent. . After having prepared the assault with an intense bombing campaign targeting German infrastructure and communications networks in France, the 9th AF actively supported Operation “Overlord” from the morning of June 6, 1944, then accompanied the American troops in their progression on European territory, until victory. The Second Tactical Air Force (2 TAF) assumed the same role, but for the benefit of British troops. Formed within the RAF with units from Bomber Command and Fighter Command in June, it provided support to British and Canadian forces on the continent, from the landings in Normandy until the end of the conflict.
This work of approximately 200 pages retraces, by means of more than 350 color profiles and several dozen period photos, the history of Allied tactical aviation in Europe in 1944-1945, the various bombing units, hunting, transport, but also reconnaissance or coastal surveillance (coastal command) being described in detail, with their specific aircraft, badges and codes.
